Opposites Attract

Every designer tries to make beautiful yet functional interiors. After organizing the basic furniture plan, accessories need to be added. One tip to remember is not to have all the same type of things. Instead, the trick is to mix pieces that are opposite from each other to create visual interest. Take for example the table top below. The dresser is rectangular as is the silver mirror, so the orchids create a balance by adding something organic and full of movement. If all the pieces in this vignette were geometric, there would be a flat feeling. Whereas by adding the simple dynamic juxtaposition of the free flowing orchids, the arrangement is much more interesting. Another opposite that adds visual interest, is to mix new things with older items. The silver mirror with its carved frame adds a dimension to the flatness of the dresser.

In the left image, the new white dresser and mirror are again geometric, so the addition of the pink flowers with the different grasses introduce movement and the organic quality mentioned above. The three pink jade pieces add a sense of weight, depth, and age to this crisp vignette. Other opposites included in this vignette are vertical/horizontal with the vertical mirror and the horizontal dresser, and heavy/light with the bulky, solid feeling of the dresser and the light, airy outline of the mirror. The list of opposites can go on forever, but keeping this small rule of thumb in mind will help with table top arrangements, types of furniture and art and much more.
